The seven places websites leak
After 17 years and 222 websites, the same seven gaps keep appearing. Work down the list; each check takes a minute or two.
1. Does the design look current?
Visitors judge credibility in seconds. If the site was redesigned more than three years ago, it reads as dated even when everything still works. A modern, polished first impression buys attention for every other element on the page.
2. Does it load fast on a phone?
Most first visits happen on a phone between appointments. If the page takes longer than two seconds to load, a large share of visitors leave before seeing a single word. Test it on your own phone over mobile data, not wifi.
3. Is it obvious what you do and who it is for?
A first-time visitor should understand your service, your location and who you help without scrolling. When services and pricing sit above the fold, enquiries rise. When they do not, people leave for a competitor who explained it faster.
4. Are you capturing email addresses?
Most visitors are not ready to book today. A genuinely useful giveaway, a guide, checklist or mini course, turns a glance into a relationship you can continue by email. Without one, today's visitor is gone for good.
5. Are your SEO foundations in place?
Titles, meta descriptions, schema, a sitemap and a steady rhythm of articles are the floor. Google cannot rank what it cannot parse, and AI engines cannot cite what is not structured. This is quiet, unglamorous work with long compounding returns.
6. Are your articles structured for AI search?
Clear headings, FAQ schema and quotable one or two sentence answers are the format ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews prefer. If your content is written only for the eye, it is invisible to the engines that increasingly answer on your behalf.
7. Can someone book in one tap?
Follow the path a new client would take, from homepage to booking. Every extra click loses a portion of people. One obvious action per page, whether booking, enquiring or calling, converts better than a contact-form maze.
