Local SEO for NZ clinics and service businesses: how to rank on Google Maps
Why does a competitor show above you on Google Maps? Usually it comes down to seven fixable things, and most of them cost nothing but time.

How does Google decide who shows on the map?
Google ranks local results on three things: relevance to the search, distance from the searcher and prominence, meaning how well known and well reviewed the business is.
You cannot move your clinic closer to everyone. You can control relevance and prominence, and that is where competitors usually pull ahead.
Seven steps to rank on Google Maps
Work through these in order. The first three matter most and cost nothing.
- 1Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, and fill in every field: hours, services, service areas, photos and a plain description of who you help.
- 2Choose the most specific primary category, such as Naturopath or Physiotherapist rather than a general health category. Add secondary categories only where they are true.
- 3Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere: your website, Google, Facebook and directories such as The Wellness Directory.
- 4Ask every happy client for a Google review, and reply to each one. Check your professional body's advertising rules about testimonials first.
- 5Name your suburbs and town in your page headings, for example massage therapy in Takapuna, and create a page for each real location you work from.
- 6Make sure your website opens fast on a phone. Slow pages lose visitors before they ever call, and Google notices.
- 7Answer the questions clients ask before booking, under clear headings. That is also the format AI search tools like Gemini quote.
Why is my competitor ranking above me?
Most often they have more recent reviews, a more specific category or a more complete profile. Sometimes they are simply closer to the person searching.
Compare your profile with theirs field by field. The gap is usually visible within ten minutes.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Profile fixes can show results within weeks. Steady movement for competitive city terms usually takes three to six months of consistent reviews, content and technical care.
Suburb searches move faster than city-wide ones. Start with the suburbs your clients actually come from.
Do I need to pay an agency for local SEO?
Not to begin. The seven steps above are free and most owners can do them in an afternoon.
Paid help makes sense when you are competing on city-wide terms or have run out of time. Our SEO plans run from $497 to $1,497+GST a month, and nobody honest can guarantee position one.
